It’s that time of year. Panic is setting in. You need a thoughtful, handmade gift tonight, and you’re fresh out of time and ideas.
You’re a maker. A gift card is a solid backup plan (and hey, mine are right here), but your hands are itching to make something. The problem? You’re not about to start a king-sized quilt.
Don’t worry. I’ve got you.
Here are three fast, genuinely easy gifts you can make in a single afternoon, almost entirely from your scrap stash. You don’t need a complicated pattern; you just need a few key ingredients.
The Stash-Buster: Coasters & Trivets
This is the ultimate stash-buster. It’s fast, it’s practical, and it looks incredibly polished.
- For Coasters: That little coaster in the picture? It’s not even quilted. It’s a clever folding trick using a few charm squares. You can knock one out in about 15 minutes flat, and it’s the perfect way to use up those adorable novelty prints you’ve been hoarding.
- For a Trivet: Need something beefier? The method is just as fast. You’ll just use larger 10-inch layer cake squares and make sure to sandwich some thermal-resistant batting inside. (Seriously, don’t skip the thermal batting, unless you enjoy explaining burn marks on your friend’s table.)
Wrap a set with a ribbon, and you’re a handmade hero.
The Speedy Braided Mug Rug or Placemat
This one looks way more complicated than it is. If you can braid, you can make this.
- For a Mug Rug: You’ll need 9 strips total. I cut mine at 1.75″, but standard 2.5″ jelly roll strips work just fine—your braid will just be delightfully chunkier.
- For a Placemat: Just… keep going. The final size is totally up to you. Start with your 9 strips and add more 3-strip pieces as you go until it feels right.
- Pro Tip: Don’t sew all your strips together at once into one unholy, tangled mess. Braid your first three, add the next three, and so on. It keeps things manageable.
The Resolution-Ready Bookmark
We all have that ambitious friend who’s making big plans for next year—more reading, more reflecting, more journaling. This is a gift for them.
It’s a simple bookmark with a built-in pocket for their favorite pen or highlighter.
Honestly, the first time I made it I totally eyeballed this one.
- I grabbed a standard paperback book to get the height roughly.
- I cut two pieces as tall as that, and a couple inches wide.
- I used iron-on stabilizer to give it some body.
- The pocket is another scrap of fabric, about 2/3 the height of the main pieces.
It’s the perfect, thoughtful gift that says, “I support your dreams of finally using that fancy pen.”
