Why AI Hallucinates (And Why That’s the Wrong Word for It)

Let’s tackle a topic that comes up a lot in conversations about AI–hallucination–and why the term can be misleading.

Why Does AI “Hallucinate”?

I’m going to let you in on a little secret: AI doesn’t actually hallucinate. But this idea of it “making stuff up” is important to understand—especially if you’re using AI tools in your creative projects, whether it’s quilting designs or business ideas.

Let’s break it down.

How and why AI hallucinates

What People Mean by “AI Hallucinations”

When someone says AI is hallucinating, they usually mean that the AI has provided a response that’s incorrect, nonsensical, or fabricated. For example, if you ask an AI about a quilt designer who doesn’t exist, it might create a name, biography, and even a career path for that imaginary person. Here’s a little bit geekier definition of AI hallucination from Google.

The word “hallucination” makes it sound like the AI imagines things like, a person might be under stress or confusion. But here’s the truth: AI is incapable of imagination or confusion. It’s just… well, following patterns.

So What’s Actually Happening?

AI systems like ChatGPT don’t “know” things the way we do. They generate responses based on patterns in the data they’ve been trained on. Think of it like a conversation quilt—a patchwork of words stitched together in a way that fits the context. If there’s no clear pattern to follow, the AI might “fill in the blanks” in a way that seems plausible but isn’t accurate.

Here’s an analogy for my fellow quilters: Imagine trying to complete a quilt using scraps from a hundred different projects without a pattern to guide you. You might create something that looks interesting, but it might not make sense as a cohesive design. That’s essentially what AI does when it doesn’t have the right data—it improvises.

Why This Happens Less Often (and How AI Is Improving)

AI is getting better at understanding context and avoiding mistakes, thanks to ongoing improvements in training methods and datasets. But just like a new quilter learning precision piecing, the process isn’t perfect yet. There are still times when AI’s best guess misses the mark.

For example, the more specific or niche your question, the higher the chance the AI will make an error. It’s like asking someone to sew a complicated pattern with unfamiliar fabric—they might get creative, but the results won’t always meet expectations.

The Big Takeaway: AI Is Not a Truth Machine

Here’s what I want you to remember: AI is a tool, not an all-knowing oracle. It’s fantastic for brainstorming, generating ideas, and even learning new techniques (hello, quilt color theory!). But when accuracy matters—say, for measurements or historical facts—you should always double-check the results.

My Advice for Using AI Wisely

Here are a few things to remember to avoid getting a hallucinated response from your AI:

  • Stay Skeptical: Treat AI outputs as starting points, not gospel truths. If something doesn’t seem right, trust your instincts and verify it.
  • Use It for Inspiration: AI is great for sparking ideas, whether it’s quilt layouts or creative writing prompts.
  • Embrace the Process: Remember, every tool has its quirks. Just like you wouldn’t rely on a seam ripper to sew a quilt, don’t rely on AI to give you perfect, reliable answers every time.
